Project #5

Pen Perspective

INQUIRY STATEMENT

How can perspective drawing techniques be used to invent a believable space that blends imagination with realism?

By combining different features or techniques in this piece, such as elevation, texture, different perspectves and shadowing, one can create realistic images that are able to blend seamlessly anything that the artist desires to portray

CONNECTION

Cultural, historical, and artistic influences with critical evaluation.

Kim Jung Gi - Artist #1

Initial investigation on well known perspective artist

  • Start with big forms, then add small details.

  • Imagine perspective grids and vanishing points in your head.

  • Draw through forms (picture the hidden sides).

  • Use thicker lines in front, lighter in the back for depth.

  • Keep your pen lines confident and flowing.

  • Try different viewing angles (top view, low view).

  • Build scenes step by step, adding layers.

  • Kim Jung Gi (7 February 1975 – 3 October 2022) was a South Korean illustrator, cartoonist, and manhwa artist.

  • He uses photographic memory, a skill he developed while in the army, to create his impressive pen drawings

  • He uses ink and brushes and employs his artistic memory to create highly realistic and detailed images.

  • Kim could complete his drawings entirely from his imagination, without the use of sketches, visual references, or other preparatory aids,

  • He often used exotic forms of perspective, such as curvillinear perspective

This image comes from initial resources that allowed me to practice a LOT of different techniques and tricks to create different types of effects in my piece.

As an example, I learned how to create both distance and emphasis on pieces by using lighter pressure and smaller pen sizes depending on the size of the object being drawn. This was applied mostly in the road of my piece, where I used both of these techniques to show distance

This one of THE MOST important practice sheets of my whole project, as here I came up with a new idea to add into my piece.

I soon came to the realization that the reference image created had more than 3 perspectives, which is something that, although I would have LOVED to explore, I wouldn't have had enough time to do so. Thereby, to truly showcase my perspective skills I decided to integrate the three first typs of perspective in my piece. 1st in the road, 2nd in the surrounding buildings, and 3rd in the main or centered building.

This practice sheet really helped me to conceptualize the road specifics as I would consider it the most predominant part of my project. The most diffircult part nonetheless, was obtaining the perfect texture for grass.

This sheet was a practice for all of the different aspects and techniques in my piece. As there is a lot going on on the bottom of the piece, I wanted to keep the attention there so the eye could follow a straight path upwards. Thereby, I wanted to have the least amount of details, nonetheles the necessary amount to compelte the piece without overwhelming details

Title: Pen Perspective Project

SIZE: 29.7cm x 42cm

Date of Completion: 31 of March  2026

The Why?:  I made this piece to experiment with mixing different perspectives, textures, layering and overall use of pens.

communicate and reflect

Challenges, successes, and self-evaluation of how the artwork aligns with the inquiry question.

For my final pen perspective project, I hope that the audience can see the following details and understand the following challenges. Given that the piece is set initially from a worm's perspective, it was extremely hard to balance 3 different types of perspective (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) into a single one that has a very specific technique or feature embedded (In this case, the worm's perspective is achieved through three-point perspective). By integrating the pigeons, which are further elevated by adding 1 or 2 layers of double-sided tape depending on the distance, I sought to amplify this perspective effect. The integration of the pigeons was quite easy as well, which is something I am quite proud of. By drawing the pigeons separately and then cutting them with an exacto knife to paste them into the main piece, I believe it gives a much more original level of detail.

Another detail that I would like to mention is that, unlike the initial reference picture, the pigeons actually flipped sides. This is an artistic choice I made as I wanted to give more prominence to the building to the far left so it could balance out the entire piece in a more seamless way.
